I’m Zena Cardman, currently a sophomore biology major and poetry minor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I’ve worked in laboratories at VIMS, Cornell, William & Mary, and UNC, but I’d always rather be exploring the natural world out in nature. I spent last summer in Tanzania, and this December I’ll be headed into the wilds of my own continent: the desert of Utah. This blog shares my experience as a member of Crew 63 at the Mars Desert Research Station.

My mom ran into your mom in Williamsburg and sent me an article about your recent adventures … Congratulations on being selected for such a unique experience, and I wish you the best of luck on achieving your goal of becoming a NASA astronaut! Sounds like you’re well on your way. I’ll say I knew you when …
